Juergen Thomas Steinmetz has continuously worked in the travel and tourism industry since he was a teenager in Germany (1979), beginning as a travel agent up through today as a publisher of eTurboNews (eTN), one of the world’s most influential and most-read travel and tourism publications. He is also Chairman of ICTP.
His experiences include working and collaborating with various national tourism offices and non-governmental organizations, as well as private and non-profit organizations, and in planning, implementing, and quality control of a range of travel and tourism-related activities and programs, including tourism policies and legislation.
His major strengths include a vast knowledge of travel and tourism from the point of view of a successful private enterprise owner, superb networking skills, strong leadership, excellent communication skills, strong team player, attention to detail, dutiful respect for compliance in all regulated environments, and advisory skills in both political and non-political arenas with respect to tourism programs, policies, and legislation. He has a thorough knowledge of current industry practices and trends and is a computer and Internet junkie.
While he was representing the Indonesian Ministry of Culture and Tourism as a marketing representation in the United States and Canada, Juergen started the first online news publication, eTurboNews in 1999 with more than 2 Million readers in 103 languages. It’s the only publication covering travel, tourism, livestyle, human rights you can also listen and watch around the globe. Today he is the CEO of the Travel News Group, with eTurboNews and 11 other publications and a network of syndication partners. Juergen was a founding member of the CNN TASK GROUP.
Juergen is the founding Chairman of The African Tourism Board he launched in 2017 with members across Africa, and is now an affiliated member of the African Union. He now leads African Tourism Board Marketing USA, helping African destinations and companies to reach the U.S. outbound travel market.
Juergen is the founder and Chairman of the World Tourism Network, a network organization for SMEs in 133 countries, and a link between private sector and public sector. He launched the Amazing Travel Awards. He is a partner in the Ageless Tourism initiative.
Juergen served on the US Department of Export Council helping Hawaii, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands with international tourism by coordinating activities with US Embassies and Consulates around the world.
He also represented the global media on the UN-World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) task force against sexual exploitation of tourism of children. His review is mentioned in the book written by Dr. Peter Tarlow on Human Trafficking and the Tourism Industry (Tourism Security-Safety and Post Conflict Destinations)
He was an industry board member of PATA, and on a scholarship board for the Caribbean Tourism Organization, he served on the board of the Hawaii Tourism Association, and was an advisor to the International Institute for Peace through Tourism and the Minister of Tourism for Saudi Arabia. Juergen serves on the Illegal Wildlife Trade Working Group by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC)
Juergen has been a board member at AMFORTH and the Ocean Alliance. Juergen has been a long year member of SKAL International in Dusseldorf, Germany.
